Summary
To implement the school division’s health services program based on requirements established by school division policies, procedures and protocols and by local, state and national regulations and statutes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
- Manage and coordinate the school health services program; follow procedures, protocols and other instructions contained in the division manuals and protocols.
- Implement and record required screening programs; notify parents when further evaluation is needed.
- Supervise and manage clinic assistant and ensure that clinic assistant is trained in CPR/AED, medication administration, insulin and glucagon administration.
- Assess student health care needs and provide intervention as needed.
- Monitor clinic records and prepare necessary reports.
- Monitor daily and as needed medications, catheterization and blood sugar logs.
- Administer nursing care procedures prescribed by the student’s physician.
- Assess students and implement First Aid measures for students as needed.
- Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
- Provide care for medically fragile and medically involved students that could not otherwise be delegated.
- Develop Individualized Healthcare Plans and provide health related input on 504 plans for students on a case by case basis.
- Serve as a health resource for the child study team.
- Orient the staff and teach specific medical procedures for the evaluation and maintenance of the medically involved student in the classroom.
- Present, train, and maintain appropriate standards from OSHA regarding contact with and possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials within the school or employment setting.
- Provide health counseling to staff and students.
- Follow procedures for suspected child abuse and neglect cases.
- Assist in coordinating activities by various agencies and professionals on pertinent health care topics for the school staff.
- Act as a liaison between the school, home, health department, professionals and others in the community agencies.
- Monitor the maintenance of clinic equipment and assist the clinic assistant in assessing the need for consumable clinic supplies.
- Conduct classroom health presentations as requested, and as time permits.
- Serve on committees, within the school division and in the community, which are related to the school health program.
- Respond as a member of the school crisis team when necessary.
- Perform other related work as a assigned by the School Nurse Supervisor.
- Perform other duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.
Qualifications
Degree/Virginia Department of Health Professions license in registered nursing (RN)
Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience-preferably Pediatrics
CPR certification
Basic computer skill and proficiency in currently utilized division computer programs
Language Skills
Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions and methods and procedures related to the job of School Nurse. Requires the ability to use proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence using correct English and a well modulated voice.
Reasoning/Other Abilities
Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems such as leading, teaching, directing, planning, coordinating and controlling. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution. Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
Physical Demands
The position requires standing/walking, sitting, repetitive hand movements (including simple grasp, pushing/pulling, fine manipulation), bending, lifting 40 pounds, squatting, kneeling, climbing and reaching.
