Summary

The school psychologist provides assessment, counseling, program planning and evaluation, parent and staff development, and crisis intervention services.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. 

  • Assess individual children to gain an understanding of their intellectual, academic, and emotional and/or behavior functioning.
  • Serve as a member of the Special Education Eligibility Committee, 504 Committee and the IEP Committee as needed.
  • Communicate assessment results through written and verbal reports.
  • Complete reports accurately and within set timelines.
  • Provide group or individual psychological counseling to help resolve problems that interfere with school performance.
  • Provide crisis and non-crisis interventions including consultation, individual and group counseling, parent conferences and referral services.
  • Work in a manner which ensures accountability, confidentiality and compliance to all federal, state and district guidelines.
  • Provide information and training for school staff and parents on topics of specific interest or need.
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.

Qualifications

  • A working knowledge of the appropriate assessment instrument to assess various individuals and groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences and/or professional literature.
  • Ability to work with and cooperate with staffs at all levels.

Education and/or Experience

  • Must have completed 60 graduate hours that culminated in at least a master’s degree from an approved program in school psychology or hold a certificate issued by the National School Psychology Certification Board.
  • Must hold a license issued by the Virginia Board of Education as a School Psychologist.
  • Successful completion of one academic year of full-time internship as a school psychologist in an accredited school.
  • Training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with children.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or public.

 

Reasoning/ Other Abilities

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions.  Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

 

Physical Demands

Work involves limited physical tasks and may involve operation of office equipment.  Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a school environment.

Evaluation

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
